2024 Biennial Congress in Pasadena

Welcome

We look forward to welcoming the 2024 New Chaucer Society Congress to Pasadena, California from July 15 to 18! Located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, 11 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena is home to an abundance of rich history, natural beauty, and educational and cultural attractions. The 2024 Congress will take place at the Westin Pasadena, in downtown Pasadena, and the nearby Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, offering attendees an opportunity to encounter the famous “Ellesmere Chaucer,” among other treasures of book and art history.

Pasadena’s own history extends much farther back than its medieval manuscript collections. The 4,000+-square-mile region that encompasses Pasadena has been home to the Gabrielino-Tongva People for millennia. They know it as Tovangar. Claimed by Spain in 1542 and ceded to the United States in 1848, Los Angeles and its surrounding cities also preserve the architectural remains of Franciscan missions, Mexican ranchos, and the plethora of modern architectural styles for which the region is famous.

We hope attendees will find time to enjoy a small taste of the richness and diversity of the Pasadena region. Within blocks of the conference hotel is Old Pasadena, the city’s historic downtown, with more than 100 restaurants, from casual to Michelin-recommended, as well as music and theater venues, museums, and retail shopping. Several miles to the north lie the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, with miles of hiking trails, while to the south extends the San Gabriel Valley basin, home to the largest Asian American population in the United States and an extraordinary wealth of restaurants, parks, and other attractions.
